Youth Council

The Youth Council is one of the Commission’s newest flagship programs. Established in 2022, the Youth Council consists of a small group of high school students from throughout Massachusetts with the purpose of elevating young people’s voices and promoting leadership values and skills among AAPI youth. The Youth Council members participate in advocacy trainings, learn how to advocate for their communities, develop events, interact with elected officials, and build community.

The Youth Council was held on a calendar year schedule when it started in 2022, but in 2023, it was switched to a school year schedule in order to better accommodate high school students’ schedules. Since its inception, the Youth Council has received nearly 100 applications.

“Be the change you want to see. You have to be willing to fight the fight to make a difference. With this amazing group of people, I hope to continue this and soon make a difference and it wouldn’t have been possible without the people and resources offered by the Commission.”

– 2022 Youth Council Member.

The Youth Council is primarily run by the Youth Coordinator, with support from the Program and Research Director, as well as the rest of the staff. For questions or more information, you can contact the Youth Coordinator at youth.coordinator@aapicommission.org.

Asian Caucus State House Visit

One of the most exciting Youth Council events of each year is the Asian Caucus State House Visit. Youth Council members get to take a tour of the Massachusetts State House and learn about the history of the Massachusetts State Legislature. In 2023 and 2024, the Youth Council was officially recognized on the State House floor at the invitation of the Asian Caucus. It is a rare honor to be recognized on the floor and to be able to sit in legislators’ seats, and the Youth Council was grateful to have this opportunity. In these visits, Youth Council members have the opportunity to speak to members of the Asian Caucus, talking about how best to become involved in activism and politics, issues facing AAPI youth, and more. The Youth Council, and entire Commission, is grateful to the Asian Caucus and the Massachusetts State Legislature for inviting the Youth Council into the halls of power and empowering our fantastic AAPI youth advocates.

Town Halls

The 2023-2024 Youth Council spent the summer planning for their Town Halls. Youth Council members worked individually and in groups to develop a virtual event on a topic of their choosing. Topics included representation in local government, AAPI experiences in education, Asian food, and special needs in the AAPI community. The town halls took the form of community discussions, presentations, interviews, and more. During the process, Youth Council members learned valuable skills about researching, outreach, public speaking, working with others, and much more.
